Halloween

Halloween is today a famous festival known all around the world but celebrated expecially in Great Britain,Ireland and America.
It takes its origins from the Celts more than 2000 years ago,so it's a Celtic festival.
The Celtic name for Halloween was Samhain and it celebrated the end of the summer,
the last harvest and the end of the year,so it also celebrated  New Year's Eve because
for the Celts there were only two seasons that were summer and winter.
The Celts also believed that the evening of Samhain was magical because the veil that separated
the world of the living and world of the dead was very thin so they could cross it easily.
People used to put outside somthing. For the good spirits they put food and for the bad spirits
they hollowed out the turnips with scary faces. In the past the priest, when the sun went down, set fire to
bonfires and gave people a piece of the burning embers,so people could carry them to their houses as a blessing.
Today people put  jack o' lanterns outside their doors with scary faces and embers inside them.

That's all. See you soon!

Columbus Day.

Hi guys!
Today  I want to write about 'Columbus Day'.
Nowadays 'Columbus Day' is celebrated in America on October 12th.
The story starts when Christpher Columbus,an Italian explorer and navigator,
decided to prove that the Earth was round but he didn't want to travel to East becasuse he thought it was more dangerous so he conviced Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Aragon to reach the East Indies by sailing West,so he arrived in a new land.
He thought that he had reached the Indies but he had discovered a whole new country.
That's why America takes its name from another exoplorer Amerigo Vespucci.
At first peple celebrated this holiday unofficially but in 1892 on Columbus Day 400th anniversary,
president Benjamin Harrison made it an official event.
Every year people in America celebrate this day expecially in New York.
New Yorkers and people from all around the world take part to a parade on Fifth Avenue.
So,today this is the most largest celebration of Italian-American culture.

That's all for today, below there are some pictures took in New York.
See you soon!
Kisses,Paola.
